”Endothelial cell heterogeneity in health & disease”
Endothelial cells (ECs) constitute the inner lining of our blood vessels, and are essential for regulation of vascular tone, vessel growth, inflammation, permeability, and coagulation. As such, the endothelium represents a key player in maintenance of cardiovascular homeostasis. The recent single-cell revolution has compellingly revealed that not every EC is quite the same. In fact, ECs can be categorized into a remarkable number of subtypes with distinct gene expression profiles and functions related to their tissue-of-origin or disease setting. Here, recent landmark studies aimed at teasing apart the heterogeneous nature of ECs will be discussed, with a specific focus on newly identified EC subtypes in different organs and conditions. The relevance of EC heterogeneity for human aging will also be covered, together with the current challenges facing this area of research.
