”UCP2 constitutes a conserved switch in macrophages to prioritize resolution of inflammation over antibacterial responses”
Resolution of lung injuries is vital to maintain gas exchange. Concurrently there is an increased risk of bacterial infections. Alveolar macrophages (AMs) play a crucial role in the control of tissue homeostasis, inflammations, and bacterial pathogens, but environmental cues that switch functional polarizations in AMs remain elusive. We found that neutrophil efferocytosis-induced reprogramming of mitochondrial metabolism locks TRMs in a pro-resolution phenotype hampering responses to and ultimately control of bacteria. Similar signatures were found in other TRMs and human AMs. We suggest that neutrophil efferocytosis constitutes a conserved feedback loop to prioritize resolution of inflammation over antibacterial responses.
